Woman home guard dies in fire at home

Hyderabad, July 07: A woman home guard attached to Bollarum police station died on Tuesday of burns she suffered in a mishap in Alwal on Monday night. A Central Crime Station (CCS) sub-inspector and the home guard’s mother also suffered injuries in the incident.

The SI, Kameshwar with 70 percent burns and Rukmini with 20 percent injuries are undergoing treatment at Gandhi General Hospital.

Cyberabad police said 30-year-old P Shruthi alias Sarala, her mother Rukmini and sub-inspector P Kameshwar were there in her house in Sai Nagar when the incident took place.

Around 9.30 p.m, Shruthi’s saree caught fire while she was cooking food. Flames spread to a kerosene can in the room leading to a flare-up. Kameshwar (57), reportedly a friend of Shruthi, and Rukmini tried to put out the flames but suffered grievous injuries, police said.

Shruthi had been staying alone in the house for several months. Rukmini went there four days ago while Kameshwar had arrived hours before the incident took place, Alwal police told Expresso. Rukmini resides at Bollarum along with her son. Police, however, are tight-lipped about the relation between Shruthi and Kameshwar. There are rumours that Shruthi committed suicide after she had a quarrel with Kameshwar.

Locals said Kameshwar was a regular visitor at Shruthi’s house. “Shruthi had been on leave ever since she had an eye problem recently,” police said.

Rukmini in her statement to the police said that the mishap happened after Shruthi’s saree accidentally caught fire. Family members gave contradictory versions on Shruthi’s marital status.
