New Delhi: A 53-year-old woman has been arrested for allegedly duping people on the pretext of providing government jobs in South Delhi here.
With the arrest of Anita Panikar, a resident of south Moti Bagh, the police claimed to have solved four cases of cheating and recovered Rs 52,700 from her.
On April 13, Sunita, a resident of South Moti Bagh, had approached police and alleged that Anita had demanded Rs three lakh for getting her son a government job.
The accused woman had introduced herself as a legal advisor and told her that she would get her son a government job as a lower or an upper division clerk.
The victim paid Rs 75,000 to the accused, police said.
During investigation, Panikar’s cell phone was found to be switched off.
The call detail records of her mobile phone were obtained and analysed.
It was found that the accused was hiding somewhere in Green Park and was in constant touch with one Arjun, a resident of Yusuf Sarai.
Police traced Arjun and interrogated him. He told police the Panikar was staying somewhere in Yusuf Sarai. A police team then arrested her from near Green Park Extension.
During interrogation, Panikar disclosed that she has duped people of more than Rs 36 lakh in the last one year, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Ishwar Singh said.
She also used to pose as a liaison officer. She used to stay in rented houses and would keep changing her addresses to evade police.
Panikar targeted only poor people.
Previously, she had been convicted in a cheating case and sentenced to four years in jail.
She had also been declared a proclaimed offender in a cheating case registered in Punjab.
The accused is a native of Hapur district in Uttar Pradesh, she got married in 1985 and her husband died in 2010.
After her husband’s death, in order to earn quick money, she started cheating poor people, said the officer.
