Woman held for duping man of Rs 30 lakh

New Delhi: A 62-year-old woman, absconsing since 2014 after duping a man of Rs 30 lakh promising to place his son in government service, has been arrested, police said today.

Deboshree Chakravorty and her associate MN Chaoudhary were declared proclaimed offenders by a court in November last year and a reward of Rs 25,000 was announced for anyone providing information about them, said AK Singla, DCP (Northeast).

The duo and their associate Shashank Bhadra were accused of duping Prakash Chand Sharma of Rs 30.20 lakh in September 2014.

Sharma had said in his complaint to police that the three duped him on the pretext of providing government jobs to his son Ashutosh and relatives. But that never happened.

In March, 2015, an FIR was lodged in the matter.

Bhadra was arrested but the other two were absconding and declared proclaimed offenders by a court on November 25.

“Several teams were constituted and door-to-door survey of Rajinder Nagar and Shalimar Garden area of Sahibabad was done.

Information was received about her presence in Rajinder Nagar near DAV School on January 13,” Singla said.

A trap was laid and she was arrested.

During interrogation, Chakravorty told police that she had promised Sharma she will arrange government jobs for his son and relatives and demanded Rs 20 lakh per candidate.

“Out of Rs 20 lakh, Rs 10 lakh were to be paid in advance and remaining Rs 10 lakh were to be paid after getting the job. Sharma paid Rs 30 lakh in cash to her and her associates,” the officer said.

When the jobs could not be arranged, Sharma asked her to return his money. “When the matter was reported to police, the accused changed their address and mobile numbers. It is suspected that she might have duped many other persons promising government jobs,” he said.

The accused was produced in court and has been sent to judicial custody.
