A woman who forced her estranged husband to consume an acid laced drink and threw the liquid on his face after he fell unconscious has been sentenced to seven years in jail by a Delhi court, which said it was clear that
her intention was to kill him.
Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Ramesh Kumar awarded seven years’ jail term to the convict Sanju for trying to kill her husband, with whom she had a love marriage in 2003 against the wishes of their families.
“Since it has been established that accused (Sanju) had committed the offence under section 307 (attempt to murder) of the IPC with her well knowledge and with intention to cause the death of injured.
“Act of convict appears to be so dangerous. At this stage after taking into consideration of the fact that the convict Sanju has a responsibility of her newly born child, in the opinion of this court ends of justice will be met if she is sentenced to undergo rigorous imprisonment for seven years,” ASJ Kumar said.
As per the case of prosecution, Sanju who was living separately from her husband after one year of their marriage
had called Singh to her house on April 8, 2005 and asked him to accompany her to the house of her friend for a birthday party.
“At the party, the accused had served liquor mixed with acid to the injured…. On insistence of Sanju, he consumed
that liquor mixed with acid and became unconscious…. Noting that she was aware that the act could cause injury
or even death of the victim, the court said, “Moreover, the accused had also thrown acid on the face of injured. This act of accused is the highest degree of her knowledge and intention to kill the injured.”
