Woman dies after delivery, negligence alleged

Chennai, May 01: A helper at the Chennai Corporation maternity hospital in Shenoy Nagar was placed under suspension and memos were served on two maternity assistants following the post-delivery death of a woman, on Friday.

A senior medical officer told Express that 26yearold Kavitha was admitted to the Corporation hospital with labour pain around 4 pm on Thursday.

She gave birth to a 2.5kg baby boy through normal delivery after three hours. While the placenta was removed and the baby was healthy, the mother was bleeding heavily, she said.

Denying the allegations of the woman’s relatives that a doctor was not present at the time, she said normal deliveries were assisted by maternity assistants under the supervision of a doctor.

“In this case, Dr Mythili was present by the bedside supervising, while the ayah Shanti and two maternity assistants attended to the delivery,” she said.

Until 7.30 pm, they tried to control the bleeding through medicines, but decided to shift the patient to the Kilpauk Medical College (KMC) Hospital when she continued to bleed heavily.

At KMC, doctors gave her anaesthesia and put sutures to contain the bleeding. However, Kavitha suffered a cardiac arrest and died early on Friday, she said. Relatives staged a protest in front of the hospital alleging medical negligence and demanded action against the hospital staff.

Kavitha’s mother alleged that the helper Shanthi and the two maternity assistants used harsh language against her daughter when she was finding it difficult to deliver the baby.

An inquiry was conducted by the Deputy Commissioner of the Corporation and Shanthi was placed under suspension, while memos were served on the two maternity assistants.
