Woman dies after abortion

Rajkot, Dec 02: A woman died at a private hospital here following an abortion conducted by an ayurvedic doctor at Morbi, said the police. The police have begun investigation and said that if found guilty, a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder will be registered against the doctor for terminating a 20-week pregnancy.

The Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act permits conditional abortion within 20 weeks of pregnancy. Preliminary investigation has revealed that the deceased, Hansa Makwana (19), and one Rajesh Ubhadia (20) had signed as husband and wife in the declaration form at the Kashi Hospital in Morbi, where the abortion was done.

“The matter came to light when Makwana died of excessive bleeding at H J Doshi Trust Hospital in Rajkot on Monday. The doctors said she was five-months pregnant and suffered heavy bleeding due to a puncture on the outer wall of her uterus during abortion,” said Inspector H Pandya.
