Officials heaved a sigh of relief after a woman who had threatened to jump off a water tank, came down after a request made by the local MLA.
A married woman Uppalapati Ramatulasi (22) along with her one-year-old kid and aged mother today climbed an overhead water tank at Shanthinagar in Kakinada here today.
She had threatened to jump off the tank if justice was not rendered by re-uniting her with her husband Kuncherla
Srikanth Kumar, who allegedly disowned her for giving birth to a girl child.
It was almost a three-hour drama, with a huge crowd including media people, the police and revenue officials
repeatedly requesting them to back off, assuring them justice.
However, they did not budge until the MLA representing their Anaparti assembly constituency, N Sesha Reddy, along
with Kakinada MLA Dwarampudi Chandrasekhara Reddy arrived there at the request of officials.
MLA Shesha Reddy talked to the DIG of Eluru Range and made him give a personal assurance to render justice. She had
lodged a complaint with the police and also taken her grievances to the collectorate and even staged a dharna in
front of collectorate, a few days ago.
She had also complained that her husband and in-laws were allegedly harassing her with the support of the
superintendent of police.
Police and revenue officials who kept vigil at the spot for three hours since morning had a tough time
controlling the mob which had gathered there.
