Tension prevailed at the APSP 8th Battalion main gate at Kondapur when wives of constables staged a protest march condemning the harassment of their husbands by the commandant.
Raising slogans against Battalion Commandant Ramesh Naidu’s high handedness and alleged harassment, hundreds of wives of constables staged a dharna at the main gate and accused him of not sanctioning leave to the constables. They alleged that the commandant was seeking Rs 500 for sanction of leave for their husbands.
Though the constables were discharging duties effectively and maintaining law and order, the commandant did not bother about the problems being faced by the constables and their families, they alleged. The wives also took serious note on the death of constable Phani Kumar, who died while discharging duties three days ago. The wives said that the officials cremated the body of Phani Kumar without even informing to the family members.
When APSP Inspector General Venkateswara Rao came to pacify the agitators they did not relent and demanded the government to transfer him immediately for his inefficiency.
Meanwhile, Home Minister P Sabitha Indra reddy assured the agitators that she would look into their issue and called upon them to withdraw their agitation. She directed IG Venkateswar Rao to submit a report on the problems being faced by the constables and Saturday’s incident.
Sabitha Indra Reddy said that she would hold consultations with wives of constables on Sunday.
