Withdraw Cases Against Kudamkulam Probe Members: Virasam

“Virasam”, revolutionary writers’ forum, here on Monday demanded that the government immediately withdraw all the cases filed against its members of fact-finding committee, which was heading towards Kudamkulam in Tamil Nadu to study the situation where people were agitating against nuclear power plant.

Speaking to mediapersons, “Virasam” leader Vara Vara Rao alleged that the Tamil Nadu government was using police force to muzzle voice of the people, who were fighting against Kudamkulam nuclear power plant. He said that over 6,000 local people were implicated in false cases by the police to suppress the agitation against the nuclear power plant.

Condemning arrest of the members of national fact-finding committee comprising Human Rights activists and environmentalists, he said the Tamil Nadu police arrested 11 members, who were traveling to Kudamkulam in a Tamil Nadu Road Transport Corporation bus and booked seven cases under Criminal Law Amendment Act against them on the charge that they were planning to attack the nuclear power plant. There was also no truth in the police claim that they were sympathizers of the banned CPI (Maoist) party, he clarified.

Vara Vara Rao demanded that the cases filed against the activists and people of Kudamkulam be withdrawn immediately. The government also should lift orders imposed under Section 144 Cr.P.C. in Kudamkulam and withdraw the police forces from the place, he urged.

The “Virasam” leaders B Ravindranath and Basith, “Arunathara” magazine working editor D V Ramakrishna Rao and Telangana Rachayithala Vedika president Juluru Gowrishanker were also present. (NSS)
