Wipro holds global marathon to raise funds

Bengaluru: Global software major Wipro Ltd on Sunday held a global marathon to raise funds for educating children with disability, the company said.

“About 68,000 people participated in the annual marathon held in 109 cities the world over, including 16 cities across India, with ‘Run with a purpose’ as its theme,” the IT bellwether said in a statement here.

Company’s employees, their family members, friends, customers, partners, analysts and suppliers were among the participants in the 10th edition of the ‘Spirit of Wipro Run 2015’, which in this tech hub was from its campus in the electronics city.

“Marathons are a celebration of the human spirit and perseverance to overcome challenges and obstacles in pursuit of our goals,” Wipro chief executive T.K. Kurien said on the occasion.

The company, however, did not disclose the amount of funds raised at the event in support of the cause.

The event had an officially timed 21 km run (half marathon) in Bengaluru and a 10 km run in Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kochi, Mumbai and Mysuru.

“The marathon has fostered team spirit and camaraderie in our organisation and the ecosystem of customers, partners, suppliers, employee families and others,” Wipro human resources global head Saurabh Govil asserted.

The event has built a large community of runners in the organisation and led to the formation of running clubs that train throughout the year to compete at regional and corporate tournaments.

“The marathon is a celebration our values and its theme highlights our commitment to social and community causes,” Wipro chief sustainability officer Anurag Behar said.
