Kolkata: West Indies pulled off a sensational run-chase to clinch their maiden Women’s World Twenty20 title after defeating defending champions and three-time holders Australia by eight wickets here at the Eden Gardens on Sunday.
Chasing a daunting target of 149, Hayley Mathews (66) and skipper Stafanie Taylor (59) made a solid 120-run opening stand as West Indies crossed the finishing line with three balls remaining.
Earlier, Australia relied on Elyse Villani (52) and captain Meg Lanning (52) to make a formidable 148 for five in their stipulated 20 overs.
The win was West Indies’ first against Australia, who held an impressive 8-0 head-to-head record over the Caribbean side heading into the final. (ANI)
