Wimbledon 2014: Maria Sharapova suffers shock defeat to Angelique Kerber

Maria Sharapova suffered a shock defeat to Germany’s Angelique Kerber 6-7, 6-4, 6-4 in the fourth round of the Wimbledon Championship.

Sharapova saved six match points at 4-5 down in the third set but the German held her nerve and won the seventh match point to enter into quarterfinals of the tournament.

Sharapova smashed 57 winners as against Kerber’s 27 but committed a mammoth 49 unforced errors.

The defeat meant that Sharapova will have to wait till next year to fight for her second Wimbledon title, having won it last in 2004.

Kerber will now play Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard in the quarterfinals. (ANI)
