Wife of former MLA Kharb surrenders before police

New Delhi, June 27: The wife of a former MLA who along with her husband allegedly cheated people of Rs 4.75 crore, on Saturday surrendered before the police in the national capital.

Anita, the wife of Ranbir Singh Kharb, who has already been arrested on June 17, surrendered before the officials of the Economic Offences Wing of Delhi Police’s Crime Branch, a senior police official said.

According to the official, their victims were close relatives and friends. The couple allegedly promised investors that they would double their money in three years.

The former Najafgarh MLA had launched a company Jyoti Fair Finance in 1998 with Anita as one of its directors. The company gained popularity and he became the area MLA as well.

“Victims were mostly either relatives or close friends of the ex-MLA and believing their promises, they started investing money in their company. Due to the victims’ blind faith in the accused, most of them did not take any receipt for the money invested,” the official said.

“They induced many people to invest money in their company. The company gave an assurance that a high rate of interest would be paid regularly or the amount will be doubled in three years and money invested will be returned as and when required,” the official said.

But later in 2002-2003, when people started asking for the promised returns, he allegedly shut down his office and disappeared overnight.
