Lucknow, August 30: Police on Monday confirmed that the wife of a convict was allegedly gang raped by four wardens in the jail compound of the Central Jail at Fatehgarh.
Investigators are now probing the role of two deputy jailors in the crime after the victim pointed fingers at them as well. According to sources, the incident took place in the evening on August 22 and reported to the police the next day.
Preliminary investigations into the allegations that concluded on Monday, confirmed the allegations of sexual assault.
The number of accused involved is however yet to be established.
District police chief Fatehgarh, SP OP Sagar on Monday confirmed that the victim was sexually assaulted in the jail compound.
“We arrive to this conclusion on the basis of the medical examination report that was followed by a supplementary medical examination for specific queries, the reports of which reached the police on Monday morning. We are also investigating into the allegations that the victim was provoked to accuse a couple of innocents as well,” Sagar told TOI. Sagar said that the victim has denied the element of consent. “We have to go by what she has to say, unless proven otherwise,” he said. As she was late, she decided to stay in the jail compound for the night – a practice that is common for Fatehgarh Jail. Around 9.30 pm, a jail warden allegedly approached her and agreed to arrange a meeting with her husband and escorted her to a dilapidated and unoccupied staff quarter in the jail compound. Here he was allegedly joined one of his associates and later four others ‘outraged her modesty’. The scene of crime is reportedly located barely 150 meters from the office of the senior jail superintendent Yadvendra Shukla.
The state prison department has also ordered an inquiry into the incident which was being conducted by deputy inspector general of police (prisons) Kanpur range, who visited the premises on Saturday. He is expected to submit his report latest by Tuesday.
After alleged attempts to hush up the case, police registered an FIR in connection with the incident on the instruction of the senior police officer. However, investigations into the case took a curious turn, when the victim’s description of two of the accused matched with two deputy jailors of the central prison.
