Cairo, August 02: Three-month suspended jail terms for an Egyptian housewife and her two relatives have been upheld by the Dubai court of Appeal.
The three are accused of assaulting the first defendant’s husband and stealing money from him.
The other two defendants are the housewife’s mother and brother, who were sued by a 32 year old driving instructor on charges of stealing a packet of Dh20,000 from him and beating him outside the Egyptian consulate office. The Court of First Instance had earlier awarded a three month jail term for each, but it had suspended it for three years.
The complainant said during interrogation by the Public Prosecution that he decided to divorce his 28-year-old wife after discovering she had bad reputation. He knew that she posted her and their daughter’s photographs on some immoral sites. He had been married to her for 11 years and they had two daughters, aged 10 and 9 years.
He went to Egypt and filed a case to get the custody of his daughters and came back after his wife came here. They had an agreement to give her a divorce for ceding the custody of their daughters. She was to be paid Dh20,000.
In October last year, he went to the Egyptian Consulate to meet her as per their agreement but was surprised to find her go back on her words. In the ensuing argument the man was allegedly bitten, kicked and slapped by the three. They then fled the scene with the money.
A police corporal told the prosecutor that they were informed about an incident in the Egyptian Consulate. When the police reached the place, the complainant was still lying on the ground with pain in his leg. He told them about what happened and his statement was confirmed by the consulate staff.
