Widow prohibited to cook for school helped by collector in Bihar

Gopalganj, Bihar: Negative attitudes, discrimination, harassment of women, and norms towards women still prevails.

A woman who has two minor children, has been strictly prohibited from cooking mid-day meals for students because she is a widow. She used to earn Rs 1000 per month as her salary at government school in Bihar’s Gopalganj district

People of Kalyanpur village forced the school to shut down since last Wednesday as they protested against the preparation of mid-day meals by the widow.

The woman approached the Gopalganj District Magistrate Rahul Kumar district on Thursday. The Magistrate convinced the protestors
and the villagers dropped their protest. He also sat down on the floor along with students and had the mid-day meal prepared by the woman.

Mr Kumar said. “I along with district education officer visited the school today and ate the midday meal prepared by the lady for students.”
