Ziauddin Ali Ahmed, The nephew of the late president, Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed who was India’s fifth president, was unable to apply for National Register of Citizenship (NRC) in Assam, which is currently being updated for the first time since 1951 to detect undocumented migrants.
The reason behind this is because they could not find any of their ancestors, including the former president on the 1951 National Register of Citizens. The rules of the National Register of Citizens is to prove that every individual or their ancestors entered the country before the midnight of March 24, 1971.
To do this, they must produce proof of their ancestor who lived in the country before that date and link data proof that they are related to the ancestor.
Those who submitted their applications by August 31, 2015, are eligible to apply for NRC. But since Ziauddin did not submit their applications because they could not find legacy data and it’s a matter of concern for him.
Ziauddin said he is not worried that about his fate or that of his family. “We can show our land documents that we have inherited,” he said.
The final draft of the NRC, comprising 28,983,677 of the 32,991,384 applicants, was released on July 30. More than 40 lakh people, like Ziauddin’s family, whose names do not feature on the list stand the risk of being stripped of their citizenship.
