Last month on February 21, the Women and Child welfare ministry informed Lok Sabha citing National Crime Record Bureau that Andhra Pradesh topped the list in dowry cases with 2511 cases recorded in 2012. These facts and figures are alarming particularly for Muslim society. At a time when the whole world is celebrating International Women Day this revelation is unfortunate that on an average 7 to 10 cases of divorce occur in Hyderabad alone. 30 to 40 cases are recorded every month under section 498A in women police station of the city in which women complain of harassment by husbands and in-laws.
A city advocate revealed the painful fact that section 498A in most of the cases is misused. In the light of his experience he told that mostly it is women who demand divorce or khula. On being ignored by husband or in laws, taunted or harassed for dowry, due to lack of compatibility or non-performance of marital obligations by the husband, women decide to teach their husbands a lesson or are forced to do it.
Now the question arises isn’t there an institution or organization which can take measures to stop such incidences from happening and to put a curb on rising cases of divorce or khula.
