Who is Arogyasri scheme meant for?

Hyderabad, July 02: The sight of an old woman, lying unconscious beside the gates of the Osmania General Hospital since the last two days, is disturbing to say the least.

The unidentified woman, aged around 55, has been lying outside the gates of the biggest government hospital in the city since Tuesday. She was dropped off at the gates by some unidentified persons and has been unable to make the last few yards inside the hospital and obtain treatment.

The gate is used by nursing students, doctors and other medical staff to enter or leave the hospital and there is no chance of them not seeing the old woman.

There is a police outpost about 150 metres from the spot where the woman, with flies buzzing around her body.

When INN asked activists of the Satya Harish Chandra Foundation about the woman, they said that they used to get such people with no one to care for admitted to the hospital.

They said that the authorities at the hospital have stopped taking in patients who are not accompanied by attenders and they are not sure of the reason why.

The Satya Harish Chandra Foundation members perform the last rites of unknown or unclaimed bodies, irrespective of their caste or religion.

Since the old woman is alive, even these social activists cannot do anything about her. They only hope that one of the doctors live up to the Hippocratic Oath and provide treatment to the poor woman.

If nobody comes forward and the old woman dies, then only they can do something about her.

A sad commentary on the state which claims to provide the best health insurance scheme for the poor in the country, called the Arogyasri scheme.
