White House to suspend August US-S Korea drill

Washington: The United State President Donald Trump-led administration is expected to announce the formal suspension of multilateral military drills on the Korean Peninsula, on Thursday.

The drills were planned to be conducted in August.

Presently, the White House, State and Defence Departments are planning on how to carry out Trump’s decision through Pentagon’s guidance, which was announced at the Singapore summit, as per CNN.

This is being done to implement Trump’s decision to suspend the so-called war games with South Korea.

However, according to CNN, a US defense official said, no updated guidance on execution or cessation of training exercises has been received, not even about the drill scheduled in August.

The military would continue its coordination to work with South Korea until told otherwise, he added.

Some administration officials believe that the suspension is a show of good faith in the North Korean negotiations.

The White House, however, stressed that readiness training and training exchanges will continue.

Countries such as Australia, Canada, Columbia, Denmark, New Zealand, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom have all, earlier participated in the drill in the past. (ANI)
