Tea garden workers in the Terai region here are on a two-day hunger strike in protest against their low minimum wages.
“The garden workers are getting very low wages. The government is not taking proper steps to solve the issue. We request the state government to fix the minimum wages as per the 1948 Act,” Jiaul Alam, spokesperson of Joint Forum.
“We are facing so many problems with the wages of Rs. 95. We cannot properly fulfil our daily needs,” added Sushil Toppo, another worker.
The workers of the Dooars and Hilly areas will also join the protest.
