West Bengal: No-trust motion against TMC govt defeated

New Delhi: The no-confidence motion against the TMC government, jointly moved by the Left Front and Congress, was defeated on Friday with 191 votes against it and 50 votes in favour.

At the end of a debate over the motion lasting one and a half hours, the opposition demanded a division following which a voice vote was taken. During the debate, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, “Those who do not have confidence in their own parties are bringing a no-confidence motion against our government. This is baseless since in the Lok Sabha we are adjusting with your parties on demonetization.”

Left Front legislative party leader Sujan Chakraborty said, “We were forced to bring this no-confidence because of the misrule going on all over the state.” Congress’s Abdul Mannan earlier this week had said the no-trust motion was a protest against the way TMC allegedly poached its MLAs, elected representatives in rural bodies and municipalities.
