Hyderabad, May 02: The state government has decided to bring those working under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme under the jurisdiction of the Workers’ Welfare Board to help them avail benefits like insurance, medical and other facilities.
Besides, a special Lok Adalat will be set up shortly to redress the grievances and solve cases of the working community.
Asserting that his government was committed to the welfare of the workers employed in the organised and disorganised sectors, Chief Minister K Rosaiah said at the 121st May Day celebrations at Ravindra Bharati here today that about eight lakh workers were registered with the welfare board and there was scope for further increase in the number of workers by next year.
For the total number of workers working in 5,102 establishments, about 5.94 lakh identity cards have been generated and 4.4 lakh distributed till date.
Steps had been taken to include NREGP workers in the welfare board, he added.
Rosaiah presented the ‘May Day’ awards to the Shrama Shakthi award winners and also the best management awards.
In all, 41 Shrama Shakthi awardees who included TTD press copy holder P Varalakshmi Bai, TTD water works fitter V Ramachandra, Sirpur Paper Mills operator K Murali, Ashok Leyland employee M Kamal Reddy and others, and 21 industries (large, medium and small scales) which include Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, Hindustan Coco Cola, Zuari Cement, Kurnool’s Bharat Petroleum Corporation etc. have received the awards.
Labour and employment minister Ramreddy Venkat Reddy, principal secretary (labour) Bhanwarlal and labour commissioner D Sreenivasulu also spoke.
