Mumbai, September 08: NCP today welcomed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s comments on the issue of distributing foodgrains free to an estimated 37 per cent of the population which lives below the poverty line.
A senior NCP leader welcomed Singh indicating to the Supreme Court, which recently directed the government to distribute foodgrains free to the poor, not to get into the “realm of policy formulation”.
Maharashtra NCP President Madhukar Pichad said the prime minister has clarified that the government is doing everything possible to distribute foodgrains at an affordable price.
The statement made by Singh has reinforced the policy decision adopted by the Agriculture Ministry headed by NCP chief Sharad Pawar, he said.
