Wear burqa to teach here

Kolkata, July 30: Thee was a major controversy in a Kolkata college after the students’ union decided to stop a guest lecturer from teaching unless she came in burqa.

The lecturer Shirin Middya has not been allowed to hold classes in Aliah University, Bengal’s first Muslim University. Shirin and her family however have refused to relent. They say she would wear a burqa only if she wished to and not under prerssure.

Middya was appointed a guest lecturer at the university in Marach this year and got the union diktat in the second week of April. The University gRants Commission does not have a dress code.

The teacher’s decision however has not gone down well with the students’ body that claims that the clothes Middya wore to college were indecent.

During all this, the University has decided to play safe, putting the issue on the backburner.
