Lack of strong leadership in the Congress party in the Seemandhra region, to face the YSRCP, is causing much worry to the party high command, particularly party president Sonia Gandhi, it is stated.
This is one of the main reasons for the high command’s inability to take a decision in favour of separate Telangana statehood, highly placed sources in the party feel. As a result of this situation, a decision on separate Telangana State is not likely to be taken by the end of this month, as anticipated by the Telangana Congress MPs.
It is said now that the high command is contemplating on announcing either a special package for Telangana or a Special Zone for the region, to placate the sentiments of the Telangana Congress MPs. AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi is understood to have highlighted these aspects during his talks with the Congress MPs and the latter appears to be convinced with the arguments. As such, for the present, the Congress MPs might maintain calm on the Telangana issue and agree for Special package or Zone, it is said.
If separate Telangana statehood is announced, the TRS would surely gain in the elections to a great extent and the Congress party would be the loser. At the same time, the party would not win at least majority of the seats in the Seemandhra region, as the leadership there is not strong enough to face the YSRCP, which has established a strong base, notwithstanding the fact that its president YS Jagan is in jail for more than one year now.
Though Jagan is facing several serious charges, MLAs and other leaders from almost all other parties were joining the party and this clearly indicated the party’s popularity among the people. The work done by late Y S Rajasekhara Reddy and the benefits bestowed by him as Chief Minister on crores of people, particularly the poorer sections of the society, are said to be a great asset to the party.
Also, Y S Vijayamma, Shamila and other leaders of he party were highlighting that the Government was keeping Jagan in jail just because he had left the Congress party, which is not justifiable.
Many believe in the propaganda being carried on by the YSRCP leaders that the ruling Congress and the main Opposition TDP have colluded to harass Jagan and his party, as they were unable to face the party in the elections. With all this, it is to be seen how things are going to take shape in the State.
