Expressing solidarity with the plantation workers of Assam who were recently attacked by a banned militant outfit, a tribal organisation ‘ Bharat Jakat Majhi Pargana Mahal’ staged a protest demanding compensation for the victims here.
The protesters walked on the streets with sticks and weapons and blocked the roads.
More than 10,000 people participated in the agitation and demanded strict punishment for the culprits.
“We demand compensation of Rs. 25 lakhs for those killed and Rs. 12 lakhs for the injured. Culprits should be arrested immediately and given harsh punishment,” said a tribal protester, Jiten Hansda.
Another protester, Shantilal Kisku, said the government should ensure security for tribals.
“Government should give compensation to the people who are murdered. We demand more security as unfortunate incidents keep taking place against our community,” he said.
Militants from the banned National Democratic Front of Bodoland (Songbijit) Group has been blamed for the killing at least 80 people in the two districts of Sonitpur and Kokrajhar and Chirang Districts of Assam last week.
