Water released into Kali Bein stopped

Kapurthala, April 17: The Punjab government, which had released 100 cusecs of fresh water from the Tarkiana barrage into Kali Bein river on Baishaki yesterday, stopped the flow of water due to alleged pressure from Dasuya BJP MLA Amarjit Sahi and some others.

The Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee had passed a resolution against BJP MLA Amarjit Sahi on Friday for reportedly terming the holy Bein as a drain.

SGPC, then asked the MLA to apologise from the Sikh community for hurting their sentiments by his “obnoxious” remarks regarding the Bein, which is attached to the early life of Guru Nanak Dev ji, who was said to have received enlightenment after a dip in it.

Punjab Principal Secretary Health Satish Chandra, who is also the coordinator of the holy Bein today took a whirl wind tour of the bein and heard grievances of over three dozen protesters near Dasuya.

An officer, on condition of anonymity said Chandra asked the protesters to show the water logging fields, which the protesters failed to do. Chandra pointed out at a running water pump and questioned how the water pump was running in a water logged field.

Chandra reportedly chided them for making false propaganda regarding the water logging of the area when there was no water logging.

Chandra, when contacted, confirmed that there was no fresh water flowing in the Bein and its condition had deteriorated due to non release of fresh water. He said that he would submit his report to Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on April 18 for the immediate release of 100 cusecs of fresh water to save the holy Bein from its further deterioration.
