Water Grid benefitting a select few contractors: CPI

CPI State Secretary Chada Venkat Reddy has alleged that the Water Grid project, being implemented by the Telangana Government, was aimed at benefitting a select few contractors.

Speaking at a Round Table conference on Water Grid held at Makhdoom Bhavan here on Thursday, Venkat Reddy pointed out that previously the State Government announced that the project would cost about Rs. 25,000 crore. Later, it escalated the amount to Rs. 42,000 crore. He asked Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao and Panchayat Raj Minister K Tarakarama Rao to disclose as to how they arrived at those figures. He said that the project has been initiated without having a clear road map or Detailed Project Report. He alleged that works were being assigned only to a few select contractors.

Telangana Political Joint Action Committee (TPJAC) Chairman Prof. M Kodandaram too demanded that the State Government convene an all party meeting on the Water Grid project. He alleged that works are being assigned to members of two-three families which lead to suspicions that the Water Grid project was a scam in making. He said the tendering process should be made online as it was done in the case of Mission Kakatiya. (INN)
