Water bill defaulters to face the music

Hyderabad, January 21: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) has decided to crack the whip against water defaulters.

The Water Board has prepared a list of top defaulters, division-wise, who have not paid water bills for at least three months. About 17,000 to 18,000 defaulters who owe more than Rs 10,000 have been identified and the list handed over to the Green Brigade team.

Financial position of the Water Board is reportedly precarious and in order to increase revenues, it has issued 20,000 notices to customers who have Rs 10,000 and above arrears to clear the dues or face disconnection.

Managing director M Jagadeeshwar has issued instructions to Green Brigade contractors to disconnect taps of defaulters. As many 19,691 notices have been issued. Disconnection (DC) and Reconnection (RC) charges will be collected in the process from the customer. DC and RC for 15 mm to 20 mm connection will be Rs 1000 and Rs 700, for 25 mm to 40 mm connections- Rs 2,000 and Rs 1,000, for 50 mm, 65 mm and 80 mm connections- Rs 3,000 and Rs 2,000 and for 100 mm connection, it will be Rs 6,000 and Rs 4,000.

Speaking to Express, HMWS&SB executive director, Ashok Reddy said the Board began issuing disconnection notices against defaulters who were asked to pay the dues within 15 days of receipt of the notice. Ashok Reddy said the notices have started yielding result as nearly 2,000 defaulters have cleared their dues. The Board collected about Rs 35 lakh from defaulters in the last one week, he added.
