Thane: In a shameful incident, a Shiv Sena functionary allegedly assaulted a lady police constable when she asked him to stop talking on his cellphone while driving.
The man has been arrested.
Shashikant Kalgude (44) assaulted the 29-year-old constable at a busy junction in Naupada at around 11 am.
The attack left her bleeding by nose, said Police PRO Gajanan Kabdule on Thursday night.

Kalgude was talking on phone while driving an SUV when he was spotted by the female cop. She signalled him to stop. However, the SUV driver tried to ran away, but the constable stood before his vehicle and prevented its further movement.
When the policewoman asked for driving licence and relevant documents, the accused started abusing her and then slapped and punched her on nose, Kabdule said.
A passer-by intervened and rescued the constable but he was also roughed up by Shashikant.
The SUV driver has been booked under IPC Sections 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his/her duty) and 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty).
