Warangal: A poor, elderly couple were reduced to begging with a placard on their neck to bribe an official for their land as tahsildar Satyanarayana allegedly demanded Rs 1 lakh from them to hand over the passbooks of the land.
The placard on their neck reads that the tahsildar had demanded Rs 1 lakh to give them passbooks to their nine-acre plot due to which the duo named Lakshmi and Manthu Basaviah of Azamnagar in Bhupalpally mandal were found begging on the streets of Bhupalpally on Friday.
The elderly couple saw a ray of hope when the state government launched the purification of the land records programme, as their earlier appeals to officials had fallen on deaf ears.
Later when collector V. Venkateshwarlu came to know about the incident, he directed district revenue officer Venkata Chary to immediately register the land in their name and hand them the passbooks.
