For wanting to marry her lover, woman thrown in canal by her own family

Lucknow: A 23 year old woman of Nirgajni village of Uttar Pradesh, was thrown into Ganga canal by her own family for wanting to marry her lover. The woman was later rescued by villagers and police have filed a complaint under relevant section of Indian Penal Code against her brother and father who are reported to be absconding. The pair was facing strong opposition from their families.

Women continue to be victims of honour killings across the country. Recently, a 21-year-old woman was killed after her parents force fed her mango juice spiked with pesticide in Nanjangud, Mysore.
