Walia exhorts people to play ‘responsible role’

New Delhi, April 11: Expressing concern over “growing crime” against women in the city, Delhi Women and Child Welfare Minister Kiran Walia today exhorted people to play a “responsible role” in making the fair sex feel secure.

“Police cannot be everywhere. The citizens have to play a responsible role in making women feel secure. People must come forward to help any women in distress,” Walia said, condemning the rape of a class X student in Vasant Vihar on Saturday.

She said fast track courts should be set up in the city to punish those involved in rape cases.

A relative was arrested for allegedly raping a Class X student while three others were apprehended for the same offence while she was fleeing after being sexually assaulted, police said today.

“We are really concerned about growing incidents of crime against women,” Walia said.
