Volcanic ash reaches Morocco

Rabat, May 11: Morocco temporarily shut its main international airport at Casablanca and four others on Tuesday due to a cloud of ash from a volcano in Iceland, civil aviation officials said.

Casablanca — the hub of operations for Royal Air Maroc — was to cease operations for five hours until 1200 GMT, together with the smaller airport in the capital Rabat, the airline said.

Flights into and out of Tangiers, Tetouan and Essaouira were meanwhile halted from 0400 GMT until 1200 GMT, it said, adding that its services to those destinations would be cancelled during those periods.
