Vocational education to go practical

Bangalore, January 07: The education department is planning to restructure the vocational education system from the next academic year onwards incorporating more practical sessions.

“We want to give them more practical knowledge instead of making them sit in classrooms attending theory lessons,” said Dr RG Nadadur, principal secretary, department of primary and secondary education.

The department had appointed a committee headed by Harish Gowda, commissioner, department of public instructions, to conduct studies on the demand for vocational courses, students’ interest and total number of students who had completed these courses in the last five years.

“The problem with the current system is that we are forcing students to study many other subjects like mathematics, science, agriculture and social science. While restructuring the system we want to do away with these subjects,” said Nadadur.

According to the sources in the department,a minimum of 35,000 students join vocationalcourses every year, but not even 25% of them get jobs after completing the course. “We want all our students be absorbed by the industry after completing their course. From the next year onwards we will make them industry-ready,” he said.

A few months ago the education department had appointed another committee headed by Prof Nayanatara (faculty IIM-B) to study the same issue. “We have received the committee’s report. It focused on how to change the existing teaching modules and we will consider the same while restructuring,” said Nadadur.
