VK Singh emphasises research works at varsities

Mathura: Union Minister V K Singh said a university and a country develop and reach new heights because of its research work.

“If we evaluate a country or a university we find they have developed because their stress was on research,” he said while delivering the 5th convocation address at GLA University here yesterday.

Citing the example of the USA, Singh said it has made its place in the world due to its research work in different fields.

In top universities of the world researches done are ultimately purchased by private companies which they use in their operations, he said.

“Of course degrees are seen at the time of interview. But companies also evaluate student on their personality, and vigour and zeal to do something new in a better way,” Singh said.

The MoS for External Affairs said, “The British system of education, under which many in the country have been educated, prepares assistants to run the government. In other countries students are inspired to do research.”

Taking questions on demonetisation, Singh said it was a “very good” step and the survey conducted by the Prime Minister speaks of its success.

“The Opposition normally creates hurdles when the government works in the interest of nation,” he said.

Stressing quality education in institutions, former director of IIT-Kanpur and Padma Shri Sanjai Govind Dhande said with good research and a patent one can earn money and attain knowledge at the same time.

Eleven students each were awarded gold and silver medals and 1,809 degrees were awarded to graduates and post-graduate students in the convocation.
