Vitamin D deficiency plagues Indians: Govt

A survey carried out by Indian Council of Medical Research has found vitamin D deficiency in the range of 10-90 per cent across all age groups, Rajya Sabha was told today.

Minister of State for Health Shripad Naik said that there is no year-wise or state-wise data.

He also added that life style diseases like heart attack and hypertension are “common” among the youth and rheumatic heart disease is also a major problem with the youth.

There is no specific study done by AIIMS in this regard, he added.

Union government had launched a National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases and Stroke and its focus is on generation of awareness for behaviour and life-style changes, early diagnosis of person with high levels of risk factors, he said.
