Visitor Jailed for Sex Out of Wedlock

Dubai, June 09: A 43-year old Italian visitor was on Monday sentenced to six months in jail for having sex out of wedlock with a Filipina. The Criminal Court of First Instance, however, acquitted him of the charge of illegally confining the woman in an apartment. He will be deported after completion of the jail term.

In the same case, a 54-year old businessman was cleared of the charge of criminal complicity. He was accused of forcing the Filipina to have sex with the Italian defendant by holding her up in the apartment.

The Italian was originally charged with raping the woman repeatedly for three consecutive days. However, the court reframed the charge to sex out of wedlock, while the Iraqi was accused of helping the Italian commit the crime by threatening the Filipina with death.

In her testimony, the 37-year old Filipina stated that she came to the UAE through a workforce recruitment agency in RAK. Four days later, on July 22, 2008, the Iraqi took her to an apartment in the Festival City. He said that he would give her a job as a waitress in his restaurant and asked her to clean his apartment.

The woman said that shortly afterwards on that day, the Italian entered the apartment and the Iraqi told her: “This is your employer and you should do what he wants or I will kill you.”

Then the Iraqi walked out and locked the apartment from outside. The Italian then allegedly raped her for three days. On the morning of July 24, they went to the parking area of the building where the woman sought the help of a Filipino who happened to be there. He called the police and the woman handed over to the police $100 and Dh20 the Iraqi man had put in her purse.

A Lebanese apartment rent coordinator told the interrogators that a security guard informed her about a Filipina crying in the parking lot. “I went downstairs and saw the woman in tears. The Lebanese witness added that the Iraqi defendant tried many times to interrupt the woman to explain what had happened
