Hyderabad, August 05: Syed Viqaruddin, the self-styled leader of fundamentalist outfit Tehreek-Galba-e-Islam, reportedly attended press conferences held by police officials using fake identity cards, police said.
Police sources said Viqar, before striking against the police twice, first at Santoshnagar and then in Falaknuma, had attended a few media conferences, including some convened by the Hyderabad police commissioner.
“Sometime in 2006 and 2007, he attended the press conferences organised by the police officers at the commissioner’s office (Basheerbagh),” sources said.
They said with media personnel attending the press conferences in dozens, Viqar managed to sneak in, though he was not representing any media organisation. “There is a need to have some mechanism to prevent people from outside the media from attending press conferences,” a senior police official said.
When he was arrested last month from Musheerabad, the sleuths found two fake ID cards belonging to two television channels in Viqar’s possession.
Meanwhile, a local court today granted police sevenday custody of Viqar. Investigators will take him into custody from Cherlapally prison, where he is currently lodged.
“We will probe his links with others. His handwriting has also been sent for analysis to ascertain whether it was he who had dropped a pamphlet soon after the shooting at Falaknuma on the second anniversary of Makkah Masjid blast,” sources said.
A police team from Gujarat is in the city to grill Viqar. He is likely to be taken to Gujarat as he is involved in a shootout in Ahmedabad in which a police constable was killed.
