Violence erupted at Bolpur railway station in Birbhum district today after a hawker was allegedly beaten to death by a RPF jawan. Sources said the jawan after an argument with Tapan Das (30), a tea stall owner, started beating him mercilessly leading to his death.
Following Tapan’s death, other hawkers and the victim’s family members vandalised the station and even squatted on the tracks for about an hour. Local police officials, who intervened to control the agitating people, were also manhandled by the mob and thier vehicles were set on fire.
Police ultimaltely brought the situation under control by resorting to mild lathicharge, sources added. UNI
