CHENNAI: Former National car racing champion Ashwin Sundar and his wife Nivedhitha were charred to death after their car rammed into a parked car in Chennai.
According to police sources, the incident happened at around 3:30 am on Saturday after the BMW car in which the two were traveling lost control and crashed into a tree, catching fire.
Sundar, 27, and Nivedhitha, 26, a doctor by profession, unable to open the doors in time and were trapped.
“When we arrived, the fire was on and we did not know the couple was inside. We extinguished the fire in 16 minutes and found them both trapped. The lady’s legs were seen trapped. The driver’s side of the car was also mangled perhaps making it difficult for Ashwin to move,” a fire department official quoted as saying to NDTV.
The video of the incident in which the car can be seen in flames next to a tree posted on social media by eyewitnesses went viral.
Police recovered the couple’s charred bodies and has shifted to Government Royapettah Hospital for post-mortem.
