JAIPUR: Close on the heels of the recent incident in Rajasthan’s Nagaur where two Dalits were tortured for allegedly stealing money, another similar incident has come to fore in the state’s Barmer where a youth was mercilessly beaten and a rod allegedly inserted into his private parts on suspicion of theft.
Police officials, however, said that main accused Moti Singh was arrested on Friday soon after the video went viral on Thursday.
The incident occurred last month.
The victim’s brother, lodged a complaint in Barmer rural police station on Thursday soon after the video went viral through which they received the information about their brother’s torture.
He said that he spoke to his brother, who informed him that on January 29, he was abducted and locked up in a hotel room where he was falsely charged with theft and brutally beaten.
He was forced to drink liquor and an iron rod was inserted into his private parts and Rs 4,800 was taken out of his pocket. The accused filmed the entire episode and later on made it viral.
Barmer‘s Superintendent of Police Sharad Chowdhary said that the victim’s family was immediately contacted soon after the video went viral, a case registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and a search is on for other accused.
“Looking at the gravity of the case, a special team has been formed under circle officer Vijay Singh Charan. The video proves the fact that the victim was brutally tortured by the accused. The victim is a vehicle driver and has not yet appeared in person in front of anyone,” he added.
As the victim’s brother also alleged that the police had detained his brother on charges of disturbing the peace on the day when the incident was reported, the SP said that a DSP has been asked to submit a detailed report on why the victim was detained.
“If there has been any lapse on the police’s side, then relevant action shall be taken,” he said.
A similar incident occurred in Nagaur and came to light when the video of two Dalit youths being beaten and a screwdriver dipped in petrol inserted into the rectum of one of them went viral.
Congress’ former President Rahul Gandhi, in a tweet, termed the incident “horrific and sickening” and asked the state government to act fast in the case. Soon after, seven accused were arrested.
