Hyderabad: The high denomination notes raised the possibility of money laundering and corruption in the country. Many operations were conducted against illegal money laundering.
In this ongoing operations the Andhra Pradesh Police has arrested an active Majlis Itthehadul Muslimeen worker Mohammed Abdul Raoof,from Saidabad, Hyderabad.
The Minerva Grand Hotel was raided by Nellore police and took five persons into custody who belonged to Hyderabad.
Sources said that the police hijacked a Sangyong SUV and seized more than Rs 1 crore in the new Rs 2,000 and Rs 100 currency notes.
According to the investigation reports, Nellore cops came to know the forebears of Raoof as he was arrested by the Gujarat police in connection with the assassination of former home minister of Gujarat, Haren Pandya. The apex court had acquitted him.
The cops have surrounded the hotel and cordoned off the area. The detained persons claimed that the cash was brought for a real estate deal.
They also said that Raoof went to Nellore along with his associates carrying cash and waiting for a deal.
Nellore deputy superintendent of police (Special Branch) M Kotareddy said. “We have seized more than Rs 1crore cash and are verifying the claims of detained persons.”
