Video of little girl reciting Quran led China ban religious activity in schools

Beijing: Education authorities in northwest China ordered kindergartens to enforce a ban on religious activity on campus after a video of a little girl reciting Holy Quran went viral on social media.

A video posted online shows a group of pupils sitting in a classroom as one little girl wearing a black headscarf carefully recites the Islamic religious text, Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post reported on Friday.

It was not yet confirmed at which kindergarten the video was filmed. however, the same video under titled “Chinese Young Girl Recites Quran,” was uploaded to YouTube in 2014.

The education authority in China’s Gansu Province in the statement strongly criticised the kindergarten, saying that netizens “strongly condemned the damaging act to the physical and mental health of the younger generation.”

China’s communist government is atheist, but people are allowed to follow authorised religions however “religious activities shall not get in the way of education,” cited Gansu education authority.

Gansu is home to about 1.6 million Muslims.
