Victim was given the best medication, says doctor

Mumbai, August 26: Refuting allegations of negligence levelled by the family members of 28-year-old victim, who died due to Swine flu, the L H Hiranandani hospital today said that he was given the best possible medication and treatment since he was admitted on August 3.

“The victim Sandeep Gaikwad was brought to Hiranandani hospital from Paramount Nursing home in suburban Sakinaka in an extremely poor condition with oxygen saturation and signs of reduced blood flow to the brain,” Hiranandani Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sujit Chatterjee told reporters today.

Gaikwad was immediately rushed to the critical care unit and hooked on to a high-end ventilator to increase his oxygen saturation, Chatterjee said, adding, that the patient was also given high antibiotics and a high life support system.

“We had a strong suspicion of H1N1 virus and thus sent his throat swabs to the Kasturba hospital on August 4. Another swab was sent the next day and verbal report confirming H1N1 virus was received by us on August 7,” Chatterjee said.

Family members of Gaikwad however alleged that the death was caused due to negligence on the part of the doctor.

“Doctors at the Hiranandani hospital only kept taking various tests. H1N1 virus was detected very late in Gaikwad which resulted in his death,” Gaikwad’s brother-in-law Vishal Dhorde said. .
