VHP stresses need to implement Indo-Lanka accord

Madurai, November 16: VHP today stressed the need to implement the “Rajiv Gandhi-Jayawardene” accord in letter and spirit, saying it gave better protection to the Tamils living in Sri Lanka.

Talking to newsmen here, senior VHP leader Praveen Togadia said Tamil Nadu and the Centre should press the Sri Lanka to implement the accord, and ask the island government to allow the Red Cross Society and other voluntary organisations to work in the Tamil areas devastated in the war against LTTE.

“We suspect the Sri Lankan government’s motive as it was not allowing even the Red Cross Society and independent agencies to help the Tamils,” he said, regretting that many temples in the country were without priests.

The Indo-Lanka accord was signed in 1987 by then Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and Lankan President J Jayawardene.
