Vatican has officially recognized Palestine. Israel’s Ministry of External Affairs issued a statement it was disappointed by this. It further said that it will not help in peace process. Palestine leadership will not agree for direct talks. Israel further said that it will review the agreement in detail and the steps to be taken will be considered.
A new agreement has been reached between Palestine and Vatican City but the pact has not been inked yet. It is not clear whether Vatican will establish diplomatic relations with Palestine. Vatican welcomed the resolution taken by the General Assembly of UNO in 2012 recognizing Palestine. This pact is a preliminary document.
President of Palestine Mr. Mahmood Abbas will meet Pope on Saturday. It may be noted that Vatican had unofficially maintained relations with Palestine for the past 1 year. In the annual calendar of Vatican the ambassador of Palestine has been included as the representative of Palestine. Foreign Minister of Vatican confirmed change in the policy of Vatican and said that this pact will be inked soon after which an announcement would be made recognizing Palestine as a State.
