New Delhi, Dec 11: Bharatiya Janata Party MP from Pilibhit Varun Gandhi will visit Sultanpur to address a public meeting on December 20.
While the party sees the visit as a tool to revive itself in the Congress domain, the young MP terms it as a visit to his late father’s place. Sanjay Gandhi was an MP from Amethi, which is a part of the Sultanpur district.
The district BJP unit at Sultanpur will hold a small felicitation ceremony apart from a public meeting for Varun. “We want Varun to be here and speak to us. He is from UP and should meet partymen outside his constituency too,” said a district unit worker.
The MP, however, said there was no political angle to the visit. “Sultanpur was my father’s area and there is still a lot of nostalgia attached to this place. I am known as Sanjay Gandhi’s son and not as MP Varun Gandhi. I will meet people and also look into projects like the BPL and the NREGS schemes, as these welfare schemes are not being implemented properly,” said Varun. “Since I belong to UP, I am making it a point to understand the entire state and its problems. I have visited places like Sambhal too,” he said.
Varun, however, will stay out of Amethi and Rae Bareli – now represented by his aunt Sonia Gandhi and cousin Rahul. “I have a respect for these places and because of this I do not go there. I will like to maintain this respect,” he said.
