Varavara urges govt to abandon Operation Green Hunt

Hyderabad, June 30: Revolutionary poet and Maoist sympathiser Varavara Rao on Wednesday met Chief Minister K Rosaiah and urged him to abandon the ongoing ‘Operation Green Hunt’ against the Naxalites in Andhra Pradesh.

Mr Varavara Rao also urged Mr Rosaiah to use his good offices with the Centre and bring a halt to action against the Moaists in Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Orissa.

The revolutionary poet also sought an amnesty for Naxals serving their time with ‘good conduct’ in various state prisons and urged Mr Rosaiah to order their release on Independence Day.

Talking to media persons after meeting the Chief Minister, Mr Varavara Rao said that Mr Rosaiah heard him patiently and assured him that he would discuss the demands with Home Minister Sabita Indra Reddy and officials concerned.

The poet said that a panel looking into alleged human rights abuses during the course of ‘Operation Green Hunt’ had recommended the formation of an Empowered Citizen’s Commission to investigate these allegations.
